Call me old-fashioned but I put a lot of trust in a promise, I have faith in a handshake. Perhaps it's the way I was brought up. Perhaps it's the result of dealing with so many genuine individuals in my many years in printing and publishing. A promise or a handshake may, of course, be in an email, on the phone or − even better − face to face.
I'm afraid that 'heretofore' and 'under-mentioned' and 'aforesaid' and all that formal contract-speak does not do much for me (unless I'm proofreading legal text, of course!). So let's not get bogged down in the minutiae of so much a page or invoicing every phone call. It's much more constructive to say 'this is the job', 'this is the deadline' and 'this is the budget'. If we are to work together, our common goal must surely always be a job well done, delivered on time and within the price agreed.
